RTSP Mixer

Several baby monitors at once

Updated October 16, 2026 · Deutsche Fassung

With two children in two rooms, the camera maker's app soon hits its limit: it shows one camera, and once the phone is locked, it goes quiet. RTSP Mixer shows every camera side by side and plays their audio at the same time, on the iPhone in the kitchen, the iPad in the living room or the TV.

Every room in one mix

The audio of all cameras goes into the same output. Each tile has its own level meter showing how loud it is there right now. When a child cries, the meter tells you which room before you even look. Volume and mute are per camera.

Keep listening with the screen locked

With Audio in the background on, the audio keeps playing when the iPhone is locked or another app is in front. The app then fetches only the audio track, which saves battery and data. On the iPhone, a Live Activity on the Lock Screen shows that RTSP Mixer is listening. A camera you only want to hear can be set to Audio only for good in the camera editor.

Sound alert

Each camera can have a Sound alert, turned on in the camera editor. A bar shows what the camera hears right now, a line the Threshold. Set it just above the usual background noise, such as the music box or the air purifier.

When it gets louder, the app brings the camera to full screen; with the screen locked a notification arrives. What exactly happens is set under Settings › Sound alert. Tapping the notification opens the camera with the clip of the sound. Rewind takes you back up to 60 seconds, so you can hear what you missed.

When a camera drops out

For a baby monitor, silence is most dangerous when it only means the connection is gone. RTSP Mixer reconnects dropped streams by itself. If that fails several times, the tile turns red and a warning tone sounds, even when the app is only running in the background.

Against little hands

If the iPad is within reach, lock the interface: the wall keeps running, but no tap mutes a room by accident. Unlock with a slider.

Which cameras work

Any IP camera with RTSP and audio in AAC, G.711 or L16. Many inexpensive pan cameras qualify, such as the Tenda CP3, which has a template and is tested on a real device. The addresses of other brands are listed under RTSP URLs for IP cameras.

To be honest

RTSP Mixer is not a medical device and not a certified baby monitor. It depends on your Wi-Fi and on the device running with sound on. It does not record continuously either; the rewind buffer lives only in memory. As a convenient everyday addition it works well; as the only safeguard for a child with health risks, it does not.

RTSP Mixer shows up to nine IP cameras side by side and mixes their audio, on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac. One camera is free, the full wall is a one-time purchase, no subscription.
